Take Action Now! Restore Catholic school funding. The state has
shortchanged Catholic schools. On November 18, the New York State Legislature will return to Albany
for a special session called by Gov. David Paterson to address a $1.5 billion shortfall in the current fiscal year's state
budget. The New York State Catholic Conference respectfully urges all parties to proceed cautiously and to keep
in mind that our state has a legal, moral and ethical obligation to care for the poor and vulnerable. As Article XVII Section
1 of the New York State Constitution states, "The aid, care, and support of the needy are public concerns and shall be
provided by the state..." Through our schools, charities and health care facilities, the Catholic Church saves
state taxpayers billions of dollars every year while providing indispensible services to the people of the state. We hope
to be able to continue to provide these services even in this most difficult economic situation. Unfortunately, as the economic
crisis worsens, the ability of the Church to subsidize much of the cost for these ministries is strained to the breaking point. Please
take a moment to urge Gov. Paterson and your state legislators to preserve the safety net for the poor and to exercise fairness
in its treatment of Catholic schools, which are facing cuts in reimbursement for mandated services for the third time this
year.

education in our state. Don't wait. The special session is just a few days away.
